ORAL CANCER
Oral cancer
is a major cause of death in the United States according to the National Cancer
Institute (NCI).
According to the
Centers for Disease Control, approximately 75% of oral/pharyngeal cancers are
associated with the use of tobacco. This includes
cancers of the mouth, throat,
tongue, lips larynx and even parts of the nose.
Using tobacco in the
form of
cigarettes, pipes, cigars,
and chew,
increases the likelihood of
developing oral cancers, heart disease, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.
Alcohol use has also been associated with oral cancer and when used in addition
to tobacco, he risk for cancer multiplies significantly.
The professionals at
White Orchid Dental believe the best way to avoid oral cancer is
to eliminate the most common risk factors described above. Regardless of
your habits, we also believe that early detection is significant to successful
treatment of oral cancers.
An oral cancer
screening is part of our examination
routine at White Orchid Dental. We offer a head
and neck exam at each of your visits. We examine for anything
asymmetrical in your head/neck region, unusual lumps, bumps, growths and color
changes throughout your oral cavity, under your tongue and around your lips.
Signs and
symptoms of oral cancer can include:
Unusual or new lumps
or bumps anywhere in the mouth or throat region.
Red or white color
changes on the gums, cheeks, or even under the tongue.
Bleeding of your
oral tissues that is unusual or recurring.
A non-healing sore
throat.
Difficulty
swallowing.
If changes are
detected early, treatment can result in significant success.
Please
realize your
risk factors
for oral cancers. Take
advantage of the professional examination skills
offered at White Orchid Dental.
They will detect any
changes may need further investigation. Please remember most of the oral
cancers are silent so just because you don't feel anything does not assure you
are free from tissue changes.
Early recognition is a key factor to
successful treatment.
